Can I tow a caravan on a regular car licence in Australia?

Yes. A standard Australian car (C) licence lets you tow any trailer or caravan, provided the combination stays under 4.5 tonnes Gross Combination Mass (GCM). This covers almost all 4WD and SUV setups with caravans up to roughly 3,500 kg ATM.

How do I know if my car can legally tow my caravan?

Check four numbers on your vehicle's compliance plate: maximum braked towing capacity, Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM), Gross Combination Mass (GCM), and maximum tow ball download. The loaded caravan's ATM must not exceed the towing capacity, and the loaded car plus loaded caravan must not exceed GCM.

Can a P-plater tow a caravan in Australia?

Yes — P1 and P2 drivers can tow a caravan in every state and territory, as long as the combination stays within their licence limits. Some states (e.g. NSW for P1) prohibit towing high-powered vehicles, but standard car-and-caravan combinations are allowed.

What is GCM and why does it matter for towing?

Gross Combination Mass (GCM) is the maximum legal weight of your tow vehicle plus loaded trailer combined. Even if your car can legally tow 3,500 kg and your caravan weighs 3,000 kg, you may still be illegal if loading the car exceeds the GCM rating.

Do I need a special licence to tow a fifth-wheeler caravan?

Most production fifth-wheelers can be towed on a car (C) licence when matched to a sub-4.5 t GVM tow vehicle. A heavier American truck (RAM 3500, F-450) towing a large fifth-wheeler may push you into LR or MR licence territory.
