What is the difference between GCM and GVM?

GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) is the most the loaded tow vehicle may weigh on its own. Kerb weight, passengers, accessories, cargo and the tow ball download from a trailer all count toward it. GCM (Gross Combination Mass) is the most the loaded tow vehicle and the fully loaded trailer may weigh together. GVM is about the vehicle; GCM is about the whole rig.

Can I be under GVM but over GCM?

Yes, and it's one of the most common mistakes Australian caravanners make. A ute with a 3,500 kg GVM and a 6,000 kg GCM, towing a 3,000 kg ATM van, only has 3,000 kg of vehicle allowance left under GCM, before the tow ball. If the loaded ute weighs 3,200 kg before hitching, it's 3,500 kg with the van's 300 kg tow ball on: right at GVM and within the braked tow rating, but the rig is 200 kg over GCM.

Can I be under GCM but over GVM?

Yes. If you load the tow vehicle heavily (passengers, canopy, drawers, water, fridge, a heavy tow ball mass) you can blow GVM long before you hit GCM. A 3,500 kg GVM ute carrying 350 kg of tow ball mass on a 3,000 kg van often runs out of payload before it runs out of GCM.

Does the tow ball mass count towards GVM or GCM?

Both, but only once in each. Tow ball mass is part of the trailer's total weight (its ATM), and it's also a downward load carried by the tow vehicle (so it's counted in GVM and payload). In a GCM estimate, add the trailer's ATM to the loaded vehicle without the tow ball, so it isn't counted twice.

Which limit matters more — GVM, GCM or braked tow rating?

Whichever you hit first. All three are separate limits: exceed any one of them and you're over the limit. In practice, modern dual-cab utes towing a 3.0–3.5 t van often hit GCM before GVM and well before the braked tow rating, which is why so many vehicles rated to tow 3,500 kg can't tow a fully loaded 3,500 kg van within every weight limit.

Can a GVM upgrade fix a GCM problem?

No. A GVM upgrade raises the vehicle-only limit (GVM) but does not automatically raise GCM. Some vehicles offer a separate, model-specific GCM upgrade (Lovells, Pedders and a few others, mainly for Toyota, Ford and Isuzu utes), but it's a different certification, costs an additional $2,500–$5,500, and is not recognised in every Australian state.

Where do I find my vehicle's GCM?

GCM is rarely on the compliance plate. The reliable sources are the owner's manual (towing chapter), the manufacturer's published specification sheet for that exact model and build year, or the technical data on the brand's website. If the only number you have is GVM, look it up before towing — assuming GCM equals GVM plus the braked tow rating is the trap.
