Question 1

Does a GVM upgrade automatically increase my GCM?

Accepted Answer

No. GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) and GCM (Gross Combination Mass) are set independently by the manufacturer. A second-stage GVM upgrade lifts the legal carrying capacity of the tow vehicle itself, but unless the supplier holds a corresponding GCM upgrade certification (and the engine, transmission, cooling and braking systems are rated for it), your GCM is unchanged. Towing a 3,500 kg van behind an upgraded ute with no GCM upgrade is a common — and illegal — mistake.

Question 2

Are GVM upgrades legal in every Australian state?

Accepted Answer

Second-stage manufacturer GVM upgrades performed before first registration are accepted nationally and shown on the compliance plate. Post-registration (aftermarket) upgrades are accepted in most states under a state-issued modification permit, but NSW, Victoria and Queensland require an engineer's certificate (VSCCS, VASS or MOD plate) before the new GVM is legally recognised. Without the certificate, your insurer can void cover on any overweight incident.

Question 3

Can I upgrade the ATM of a caravan or trailer?

Accepted Answer

Yes — but only if the chassis, axles, suspension, brakes and coupling are all rated for the higher mass. Reputable Australian caravan manufacturers (AL-KO, Cruisemaster, Vehicle Components) publish ATM upgrade kits with engineering sign-off. State transport departments require the upgrade to be re-plated and the registered ATM updated before the van can legally tow at the new weight.

Question 4

What's the difference between a payload upgrade and a GVM upgrade?

Accepted Answer

Payload is simply GVM minus kerb weight. You can't 'upgrade' payload directly — you either raise GVM (more legal carrying capacity) or reduce kerb weight (lighter accessories). Most aftermarket payload claims are actually GVM upgrades repackaged.

Question 5

Can GCM be increased on a vehicle?

Accepted Answer

Yes, for a small number of popular Australian tow vehicles. Lovells offers engineered GCM upgrades on selected Ford Ranger, Toyota HiLux, Mazda BT-50 and Isuzu D-Max chassis, typically lifting GCM to 7,100 kg or 7,500 kg, and Pedders, ARB Old Man Emu and ROH also have model-specific kits. A GCM upgrade almost always requires the matching GVM upgrade to be fitted at the same time, carries its own engineer's certificate (VSCCS / VASS / MOD plate post-registration), and must be reflected on the registration before you tow at the new combined weight. There is no universal GCM upgrade — it's strictly model and chassis specific.

Question 6

Will an aftermarket tow bar or chip increase my GCM?

Accepted Answer

No. Heavier-rated tow bars, performance chips, upgraded brakes or transmission coolers might make towing safer or more comfortable, but none of them legally change your GCM. Only an engineered, certified GCM upgrade fitted by an approved installer and registered with your state transport authority lifts the legal combined-weight ceiling.
