Question 1

What are vehicle towing limits?

Accepted Answer

Vehicle towing limits are the manufacturer's maximum legal figures for your vehicle: braked and unbraked towing capacity, GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass), GCM (Gross Combination Mass), maximum tow ball download and individual axle limits. You must stay under every one of them at the same time — not just the headline tow rating.

Question 2

Where do I find my vehicle's towing limits?

Accepted Answer

Braked and unbraked tow ratings and GCM are listed in your owner's manual and manufacturer specifications. GVM and axle limits are stamped on the vehicle's compliance plate, usually in the engine bay or door jamb. Towbar and tow ball ratings are on the towbar's own plate — they can be lower than the vehicle's rating.

Question 3

Is the 3,500 kg towing limit the real limit?

Accepted Answer

Rarely. A 3,500 kg braked rating assumes an almost empty vehicle. Once you add passengers, fuel, accessories and tow ball download, GCM usually becomes the binding limit and your real-world towing limit drops to around 2,800–3,200 kg on most dual-cab utes and large 4WDs.

Question 4

Does tow ball weight count toward my vehicle's limits?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Tow ball download sits on the vehicle, so it counts toward GVM and the rear axle limit, not the trailer's weight. A 350 kg ball weight can push a loaded ute over GVM even when the caravan itself is legal.

Question 5

What happens if I exceed my vehicle's towing limits?

Accepted Answer

Exceeding a towing limit can void your insurance, make the vehicle unroadworthy, and attract fines and demerit points that vary by state. Enforcement is done at weighbridges and roadside checks with portable scales.

Question 6

Can vehicle towing limits be increased?

Accepted Answer

GVM and in some cases GCM can be increased with a certified upgrade, but the manufacturer's maximum tow rating itself generally cannot be raised. A GVM upgrade increases what the vehicle can carry, which often restores usable towing capacity.

Question 7

What is braked towing capacity?

Accepted Answer

Braked towing capacity is the maximum weight of a trailer with its own brakes that your vehicle is legally allowed to tow. The trailer's brakes must be operational and rated to the trailer's ATM. This is always higher than the unbraked towing capacity, which is usually 750 kg for small trailers without brakes.

Question 8

How do I work out my towing capacity?

Accepted Answer

Work out your towing capacity in three steps: 1) Find your vehicle's braked towing capacity, GVM and GCM in the owner's manual or on the compliance plate. 2) Load your vehicle as you would for a trip and weigh it, or add up passengers, fuel, accessories and cargo. 3) Subtract the loaded vehicle weight from GCM to find your real trailer ceiling, then confirm it is also under the braked tow rating and that tow ball weight fits inside your remaining GVM.
