What's the best ute for towing 3500kg?

For maximum 3,500kg towing, the Ford Ranger V6, Isuzu D-Max, Toyota HiLux, and Volkswagen Amarok all offer this capacity. The Ford Ranger V6 stands out with its class-leading 959kg payload. If you need to pull more than 3,500 kg, the Ford Ranger Super Duty is rated to 4,500 kg braked with an 8,000 kg GCM.

Which ute can tow more than 3,500 kg in Australia?

The Ford Ranger Super Duty is the standout, rated to 4,500 kg braked towing with a 4,500 kg GVM and 8,000 kg GCM — well beyond the 3,500 kg ceiling shared by most dual-cab utes. It's sold as a cab-chassis (Single, Super and Double Cab) aimed at heavy caravans, gooseneck horse floats and commercial tow work.

Is a dual-cab ute good for towing caravans?

Yes, dual-cab utes are excellent for towing caravans. They combine high towing capacity (up to 3,500kg), generous payload for gear, and the practicality of a tray for bikes, kayaks, or additional equipment. Most modern dual-cabs also offer car-like comfort.

How much payload do I need when towing?

When towing, you need enough payload for passengers, accessories, and towball download (typically 10% of trailer weight). For a 3,000kg caravan, expect 300kg towball load. Add passengers (75kg each) and accessories. Aim for at least 800-1000kg payload for comfortable margins.

Which ute has the best fuel economy when towing?

The Isuzu D-Max typically achieves the best fuel economy when towing, followed closely by the Toyota HiLux. Expect around 12-15L/100km when towing depending on caravan size and conditions. The newer Ford Ranger V6 is surprisingly efficient despite its larger engine.

Should I get a 4x4 or 4x2 ute for towing?

4x4 is recommended for caravan towing in Australia. It provides better traction at caravan parks (often on grass or gravel), handles boat ramp access, and gives confidence on unsealed roads. The weight and fuel economy penalty is minimal for the benefits gained.
