What does 'real-world payload' mean when towing 3.5 tonnes?

Real-world payload is what's left for passengers and gear after you subtract the towball download from the vehicle's stated payload. Towing 3,500kg typically puts 350kg on the towball (10%). A ute with 950kg payload suddenly has only 600kg for people, luggage, and accessories. This is the number dealers rarely advertise.

Can I tow 3,500kg with a full load of passengers?

Usually not legally. If your vehicle has 600kg real-world payload and you have five adults (~400kg) plus luggage and fuel, you can exceed payload before accounting for any accessories. You must stay under GVM at all times. Use a GVM calculator to check your specific combination.

Is 3,500kg towing capacity enough for a big caravan?

Most family caravans have an ATM between 2,500-3,200kg. A 3,500kg-rated vehicle handles these comfortably with a safety margin. However, if your caravan is 3,200kg ATM and your ute's real-world payload is tight, you may need to consider a GVM upgrade or a lighter van.

What's the difference between towing capacity and GCM?

Towing capacity is the max trailer weight. GCM (Gross Combination Mass) is the total weight of vehicle plus trailer when both are fully loaded. You can be under both towing capacity and GVM individually but still exceed GCM. Always check all three numbers.

Do I need a GVM upgrade to tow at 3.5 tonnes?

Not necessarily — many modern utes handle it within factory limits. But if you carry heavy accessories (bull bar, canopy, drawers) and tow a heavy van, a GVM upgrade can restore legal payload. Know My Tow's GVM calculator shows whether your specific setup needs one.

Which 3.5t tow vehicle has the best real-world payload?

Of the variants compared here, the Toyota HiLux SR5 leads with about 750kg left when towing at the limit, followed by the Mitsubishi Triton GSR (~700kg) and Ford Ranger Wildtrak (~661kg). Large SUVs such as the LandCruiser 300, Everest, Patrol and Prado drop to roughly 255-385kg, making them better suited to lighter caravans or fewer passengers.
