What does tare weight mean on a caravan?

Tare is the weight of the empty caravan as built, before water and your gear are loaded. It's printed on the caravan's build plate next to the ATM.

Is tare weight the same as kerb weight?

No. For vehicles, tare in Australia assumes only 10 litres of fuel, while kerb weight assumes a full tank. Kerb weight is the more realistic starting point for payload.

How do I calculate caravan payload from tare?

Subtract the tare from the ATM (Aggregate Trailer Mass). What's left is the most you can carry in water, gas, gear and any extras fitted after the van was plated.

Does tare include water and gas?

Water is not included. Gas bottles and batteries vary by manufacturer, so check the build sheet or weighbridge docket.
