To raise combined weight, you need a separate GCM upgrade, which only a handful of vehicles can have.

Is a pre-rego or post-rego GVM upgrade better?

Pre-registration (fitted before first compliance) is cleaner, cheaper and recognised nationally — the new GVM appears on the original compliance plate and there's nothing to re-certify. Post-registration is the only option once the vehicle is on the road; it requires an engineer's certificate, a modification plate and state re-registration, and is not automatically recognised when you move interstate.

Will a GVM upgrade void my new-car warranty?

It can affect warranty on the suspension and driveline components touched by the upgrade. Most major manufacturers (Toyota, Ford, Isuzu) will not void the entire vehicle warranty, but they can decline warranty claims on parts the modification has loaded beyond original spec — typically rear differential, hubs and driveshafts. Does a GVM upgrade increase GCM?

Not by itself. A GVM upgrade raises the carrying capacity (GVM) of the tow vehicle, but GCM is a separate combined-weight limit set by the manufacturer. GCM only goes up if the same supplier offers a matching, model-specific GCM upgrade and it is certified and registered. Many owners mistakenly fit a GVM upgrade and then assume they can tow more — without a GCM upgrade, the combined ceiling stays exactly the same.
