Is payload the same as GVM?

No. GVM is the maximum loaded weight of the vehicle, while payload is how much you can add to reach that GVM limit. Think of payload as the 'space' between kerb weight and GVM – once you fill that up with people, gear and tow-ball weight, you're at or near your maximum.

Does tow-ball weight reduce my payload?

Yes. Tow-ball weight is carried by the vehicle, so it uses up payload. For example, if your available payload is 700 kg and your tow-ball download is 250 kg, you only have about 450 kg left for passengers, accessories and cargo.

Why is my real-world payload lower than what the brochure says?

Brochure figures are often based on a base model with minimal accessories. Once you fit bullbars, sidesteps, canopies, extra batteries or long-range tanks, the effective kerb weight increases, which reduces available payload. Our calculator allows you to add typical accessories so you get a more realistic picture.
