Is 4WD necessary for towing a caravan?

4WD isn't strictly necessary for towing on sealed roads, but it provides significant advantages for accessing caravan parks on unsealed roads, beach camping, and remote destinations. For Australian touring, 4WD capability is highly recommended.

What's the best 4WD for towing off-road?

The Toyota LandCruiser 300 is considered the best 4WD for off-road towing due to its proven reliability, excellent approach/departure angles, and robust construction. The Nissan Patrol Y62 is a close second with its powerful V8 engine.

Can I tow with part-time 4WD?

Yes, but use 2WD mode on sealed roads to avoid drivetrain wear. Engage 4WD for unsealed surfaces, soft sand, or slippery conditions. Full-time 4WD systems (like LandCruiser) are more convenient for mixed driving.

Does 4WD reduce towing capacity?

Generally no - most 4WD vehicles maintain the same towing capacity as their 2WD counterparts. However, 4WD models are typically heavier, which may impact payload capacity and GCM calculations.

What modifications help with off-road towing?

Popular modifications include GVM upgrades, suspension lifts, larger tyres, bull bars, UHF radios, and recovery gear. Always ensure modifications are compliant and factor into your weight calculations.
