What is the best car for towing a caravan in Australia?

The Toyota LandCruiser 300 is widely considered the best car for towing caravans in Australia due to its 3,500kg towing capacity, proven reliability, excellent resale value, and strong off-road capability. For better value, the Ford Ranger V6 and Isuzu D-Max are excellent alternatives.

How much towing capacity do I need for a caravan?

Most family caravans weigh between 2,000-3,000kg fully loaded (ATM). You should choose a vehicle with at least 10-20% more towing capacity than your caravan's ATM for safety margins. A 3,500kg rated vehicle suits most caravans up to about 3,200kg ATM.

Is 4WD better for towing?

4WD provides better traction when towing, especially for caravan park access, beach driving, or unsealed roads. However, 2WD vehicles can tow equally well on sealed roads. If you plan to explore off-road or access remote locations, 4WD is recommended.

What's more important: towing capacity or payload?

Both are crucial. Towing capacity determines how heavy a trailer you can pull, while payload determines how much weight your vehicle can carry (passengers, accessories, towball weight). Many towers overlook payload - ensure your vehicle can handle both your load and the towball weight.

Should I buy a ute or SUV for towing?

Utes typically offer higher payload and more versatility for carrying gear. SUVs provide better weather protection for cargo and often more comfortable long-distance touring. Many modern utes (Ranger, D-Max, HiLux) now offer SUV-like interiors with ute capability.
